How do I prepare for a trip to Ghana?
You will need a 1) valid passport that will not expire within six months of your travel dates 2) a visa and 3) a yellow fever vaccination. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 74°F to 91°F and is rarely below 73°F or above 93°F. The hot season lasts for 5.8 months, from November 16 to May 10, with an average daily high temperature above 89°F. The hottest month of the year in Accra is March, with an average high of 91°F and low of 79°F. The cool season lasts for 2.2 months, from July 2 to September 8, with an average daily high temperature below 83°F. The coldest month of the year in Accra is August, with an average low of 75°F and high of 82°F. I also highly recommend always having doctor-approved medicines for travel's diarrhea with you. While the odds of getting this is low, it's better to have the medication and not need it, than need it and not have it.
How do pack for the trip to Ghana?
In general, dress in Ghana is very casual, yet stylish. Also, Ghanaians are not afraid of color. You will see a full spectrum of color choices and styles worn outside the usual white, black, blue, tan/khaki, brown, and red commonly seen here in the United States. During the first part of the trip, we will be touring and shopping. Choose comfortable shoes that can climb stairs and that you can walk in on uneven pavement, paved pathways, as well as muddy/dusty trails. While in Ghana, you will definitely want to purchase clothing, so keep that in mind too.
Once you begin panchakarma in the clinic, you will want to choose loose, comfortable fitting clothing. Shirts, polos, and tops without buttons are the best choice. Be prepared to expose your mid-section in order to fit an eight inch wide velcro belt around your waist. By the way, your waist is measured at your belly button line around. For the bottom layer, the recommendation is three pieces of clothing: 1) atheleisure pants, 2) panties/boxer briefs, and 3) thin running shorts or swim trunks with a liner. You will be wearing boxer briefs or panties during most of the treatments. The thin running shorts are for the TENS machine. For footwear, slip-on shoes or slides or something similar that you can take on and off easily without a lot of effort are preferred.
If the doctor prescribes shirodhara, your scalp and hair will be saturated with oil. Don’t worry, the oils used are very healthy for your skin and hair. However, wigs, extensions and complicated hair styles may be compromised so be prepared to remove/undo them prior to the seven day treatment cycle. Additionally, you will be experiencing the steam box daily. As such, choose clothing that is wash and wear and generally uncomplicated. In short, athleisure-wear works well.
There is an optional ecumenical Sunday service during the trip. Business casual/dresses with sandals, and the like are appropriate.
What language do Ghanaians speak? What are the people of Ghana like?
English is the official language of Ghana and over 67% of the population speaks English. Of the languages indigenous to Ghana, Akan is the most widely spoken in the south. Accra is located on the southern coast of Ghana. Dagbani is most widely spoken in the north.
Unlike the many dated stereotypes depicted by some news outlets and the media, Accra is a modern, progressive, metropolis that is still developing. Ghana is also regarded as one of the most peaceful countries in the world, with citizens full of hope and joy. With its sunny beaches, lively cities, friendly people, and easy methods of travel around the country, Ghana is a great place for tourists. The current population of Accra, Ghana in 2025 is estimated to be approximately 2,788,380. This figure reflects a growth trend, with an increase of about 67,220 people from the previous year, representing a 2.47% annual change.
In terms of the broader metropolitan area, the population is around 5.46 million, making it the most populous city in Ghana and a significant urban center in West Africa.
Once I pay my deposit and I am booked on a flight and into the hotel, what is refundable?
Airfare and hotel are refundable per airline/hotel guidelines if you cancel. Travel and cancellation insurance will be offered at an additional cost at the time of booking and covers most emergency situations. Outside of that, any portion that you pay in advance can be applied as a credit to a future trip.
Is Ghana safe?
Absolutely! Ghanaians are famously friendly people. Like any large city there are pockets of criminal activity. However, as a whole, Accra is a very safe and tourist friendly capital!

Enjoying a meal by using more senses.
Ghanaians not only use their sense of sight, smell, and taste to eat. They also use touch. As such, you will see many folks eating with one hand (usually the right). Watch this short video and see how I navigate it.
